Excel DAY Function


While using Excel, if there is a need to extract the day of the month from the given date, this function can be used. DAY function provided by Excel helps to return day of the month from the selected range of dates and will show a number between 1 to 31 from a provided date. The number that is derived from this function of Excel can further be used in other formulas, for example, DATE function.


Get the day as a number (1-31) from a date the main purpose of this Excel function is to derive day from the provided date and display it as a number from 1 to 31 in the relevant cell where the formula has been applied.

Return value

The return value after applying the formula is between 1 to 31 that depicts the day of the month from the date.

There is only one argument used in this function that is a date. This function needs to have a valid date that is according to excel in serial number format. The format must be that which is understandable by Excel.


There is one assumption that must be considered and kept in mind that Excel accepts only those date that is after 1/1/1900. This function cannot work for dates that are before this period.
