How about a dummy file so I can understand your requirement better?
User
27/06/2018 - 05:02
I only have 2 columns.. 1- letter rec'd date
User
27/06/2018 - 05:03
2nd one would be the formula
User
27/06/2018 - 05:03
or date
Excelchat Expert
27/06/2018 - 05:03
So if received date is 1/5/2018 then the result you want is 2/1/2018? If the received date is 1/31/2018 then the received date is 3/1/2018?
User

This is the reason why I would prefer to have the file or a sample file since I don't know what your input in column A looks like.

The value error may be due to several reasons. One of which is that the value in your first column is not being recognized as a proper date by Excel.
