Excel - IF Function Problem - Expert Solution

Question description:
This user has given permission to use the problem statement for this blog.

I am trying to put in an IF formula and although it works on all the other excel sheets I've worked on it is impossible to get it started in this new tab. The problem would be : =IF(G9="ENT.PSAB",N9,"") It simply doesn't do anything, when what I want is the debit amount to be repeated in another column with the same amount. Save typing in manually.

I am here to be of assistance
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:38
Please give me a minute to read through the question
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:39
It seems you are having problems with IF formular on a tab
User 07/06/2018 - 01:39
yep
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:39
Can you please upload the sheet for review or would you rather I explain the solution
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:39
?
User 07/06/2018 - 01:40
I would rather explain on the sheet here
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:40
Ok
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:40
=IF(G9="ENT.PSAB",N9,"")
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:41
I think you want to compare the value of cell G9
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:41
with a fixed value "ENT.PSAB"
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:41
If the value is true, the cell should return value of Cell N9
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:42
if the test is false, the cell should return as an empty test
User 07/06/2018 - 01:42
I have a row of columns which all have descriptions in. To the left of these columns I would have an amount in say, column C which relates to say, F and I want to be able automatically input the same amount I have put in column C
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:43
Ok.
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:44
If I get you right please, you want to copy the value of Column C to F based on a criteria
User 07/06/2018 - 01:44
In otherwords, every time I put an amount in Column C it is reflected automatically in the appropriate headed column eg. Column C = Travel so every time I input into the amount coloumn it will automatically repeat in the appropriate column
User 07/06/2018 - 01:44
Yes
User 07/06/2018 - 01:45
I have been using as an example
User 07/06/2018 - 01:46
=IF(C44="Travel-PSAB",F44," ")
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:46
Ok. Thanks
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:47
Have you defined a value for "Travel"?
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:47
Or does it relate to a cell?
User 07/06/2018 - 01:47
It relates to a cell
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:48
Ok. Good
User 07/06/2018 - 01:48
The amounts are different they change
User 07/06/2018 - 01:48
The above formula worked on another of my worksheets so why isn't working now??
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:49
Can you please replace the variable "Travel" with a cell and confirm if the formular works?
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:49
Excel will return error if it is unable to locate the value of a referenced variable
User 07/06/2018 - 01:49
Sorry, I don;t understand
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:49
Ok
User 07/06/2018 - 01:50
Yes it does - excel keeps telling me to put an apostrophe in front of the first =
User 07/06/2018 - 01:50
This does not cure the problem - it does nothing
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:51
for example, replace =IF(C44="Travel-PSAB",F44," ") with =IF(C44="A1-PSAB",F44," ")
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:52
Please make sure A1 contains a numerical figure for this test
User 07/06/2018 - 01:52
Why A1?
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:52
The purpose is to test variable "travel" for validity
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:52
It can be any cell number that contains a number
User 07/06/2018 - 01:52
If you see my table opposite - I want that 12.70 to automatically appear in column G18
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:53
Ok. I can see the Document preview now
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:53
Thanks
User 07/06/2018 - 01:54
so that every time I input an amount that relates to PSAB-TRAVEL
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:54
Thanks for extending the time
User 07/06/2018 - 01:54
it appears also under the heading PSAB-TRAVEL
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:54
From the preview
User 07/06/2018 - 01:56
are you asking me a question?
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:56
Yes Please
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:57
The referenced Cell F44 does not contain any value
User 07/06/2018 - 01:57
Oh please, that was an example, NOT LITERALLY!! I have shown you opposite what I am looking for
User 07/06/2018 - 01:58
Are you English speaking>
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:58
Yes please
User 07/06/2018 - 01:58
or is this your second language you keep saying yes please -
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:59
I speak English. Please allow me explain what I mean
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:59
The IF function can only perform a logical test and return one value for a TRUE result, and another for a FALSE result.
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 01:59
For example
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:00
Please see my example in Cell B22
User 07/06/2018 - 02:00
Okay before the example. Please type for me the exact excel formula to give me what I have explained above.
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:01
I compared the value of Cell F15 and B18
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:01
If they are the same, the excel should return F18 but if not, the excel should return G18
User 07/06/2018 - 02:02
I really don't think you understand what I require,. I give up.
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:02
Please don't
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:02
I am here to assist please
User 07/06/2018 - 02:03
BUT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:03
Please explain one more time. Please
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:03
I am sorry I didn't get your initial explaination
User 07/06/2018 - 02:04
IF I PUT £20.00 in column C AND IT IS FOR ENT.PSAB THE COLUMN WITH ENT.PSAB WILL AUTOMATICALLY HAVE £20.00. AND WHEN I PUT A DIFFERENT AMOUNT IN FOR ENT.PSAB IT WILL GO AUTOMATICALLY INTO ENT.PASB COLUMN
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:05
Ok Sir. I believe I get you now
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:06
You want to reflect the value of Column C in Column F if the value is same with ENT.PSAB
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:06
Am I right Please?
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:06
I am sorry this is taking your time but please confirm if it is right
Excelchat Expert 07/06/2018 - 02:07
