I need a formula which will create a sum from one column for a Monthly summary. For instance expenses posted between Jan 1- Jan 31, and then Feb 1 - Feb 29, etc. Each monthly total will be in a separate cell. This is what I have

Hello,
hope all is well. Can you please help me use sumif formula using dates.
I want to sum values if the date is before 31/12/2018 but it's not working although i used =SUMIF($I$152:$I$238,"<r152",$J$152:$J$238).
I part includes dates, R is the 31/12/2018 and J part is the values to be summed.
