Do you have sample data which we can use to illustrate how to solve this problem?
User
10/10/2018 - 02:21
yes i understand
User
10/10/2018 - 02:22
no its not a problem i just need to know how to do it step bby step
User
10/10/2018 - 02:22
for my notes
User
10/10/2018 - 02:23
im trying my best to catch up in school and google is not helping right now lol
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:23
Okay.
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:24
Basically, IF is a function which returns a value when a condition is TRUE and another value when a condition is FALSE.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:24
yes
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:24
Let me show you an example in the sheet to your right.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:25
ok
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:26
For example in cell C3 we have this function:
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:27
=IF(B3>=50,"Above Average", "Below Average")
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:27
Basically, the IF function checks the value in B3, if the value is greater than or equal to 50, it returns the remarks "Above average"
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:28
Otherwise, it returns "Below Average"
User
10/10/2018 - 02:28
ok
User
10/10/2018 - 02:28
but what is nesting?
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:28
That is the next thing to know.
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:29
Nesting means using functions within other functions.
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:29
An example is of a grading system.
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:29
Let me illustrate it to the right.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:30
ok
User
10/10/2018 - 02:30
thanks
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:31
We can nest IF function with IF functions, like:
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:31
=IF(B3>80,"A",IF(B3>70,"B",IF(B3>60,"C",IF(B3>50,"D","E"))))
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:32
I have put it in D3
User
10/10/2018 - 02:32
ok
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:32
If we change the value of B3
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:32
The grade will change depending on the range.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:33
oh ok
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:33
Is there an question you have so far?
User
10/10/2018 - 02:33
i think i understand
User
10/10/2018 - 02:34
so this is creating a nested If function?
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:34
That is very good.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:34
so a nested function is just a function within another function?
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:34
Yeah, creating IF function within other IF functions is called NESTING.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:35
ooooooh!
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:35
EXACTLY
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:35
It has not to be an IF function
User
10/10/2018 - 02:35
so its only if conctions like countif?
User
10/10/2018 - 02:35
if functions i mean
User
10/10/2018 - 02:35
ok
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:36
NO, nesting can be done with any other functions.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:36
ok
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:36
It has not to do with the IF functions.
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:36
Another example is:
User
10/10/2018 - 02:36
so say um sum with another sum?
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:36
Yeah
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:36
OR
User
10/10/2018 - 02:37
a function within another function
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:37
TODAY function in YEAR function like:
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:37
=YEAR(TODAY())
Excelchat Expert
10/10/2018 - 02:38
That is another nested example, they are several of them which you can make.
User
10/10/2018 - 02:38

User
10/10/2018 - 02:40

10/10/2018 - 02:40
