Excel - IF Function Problem - Expert Solution

Question description:
This user has given permission to use the problem statement for this blog.

how do i create a formula to change a number to a line of text, ie i have about 20 descriptions of tasks on a timesheet, and instead of repeatedly typing text i was wondering if i could create a short cut.. ie. type the number 1 or a short cut and a line of text appears in the cell.. for example task 1 : meeting on site to discuss measurements. task 2: meeting in house with MD to discuss progress and so on

Welcome, thank you for choosing Got It Pro-Excel! I'll be glad to assist you with your concern. :)
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:08
From what I've understood in your problem description, you want to automatically return a particular text when its "code" is entered in another cell. Like when you Enter "Task 1", you want a formula in another cell to return "Meeting on site to discuss measurements." Is this correct?
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:12
I believe this can be done with the use of a VLOOKUP function. Let me provide you a solution using the examples you've stated in the document preview.3
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:15
Okay, already done! If you look at cell C3, we have the following formula: =IF(B3="","",VLOOKUP(B3,'Source sheet'!$A:$B,2,0))
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:16
This formula states that IF cell B3 is blank (meaning no code was entered), C3 would be blank as well. However, if cell B3 has a code, the VLOOKUP function will return the description of that code.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:17
You can just drag down the formula for the other codes in column B as well.
User 16/08/2018 - 11:18
yes i can see chat box
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:18
I can see that you've been active in the document preview! I hope you'd be able to communicate in this chatbox as well.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:18
Oh nice! I thought there were concerns with our communication.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:18
If you go to "Source sheet", you'll see a list of codes and their respective description.
User 16/08/2018 - 11:18
sorry it is the first time i have used this site.. amazing
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:19
Oh okay I see. Don't be afraid, we're a legit platform. :)
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:20
So in the source sheet, you just need to fill in what code corresponds to what description. In the main sheet, using our formula, you can now return the description corresponding to a code you typed. :)
User 16/08/2018 - 11:20
thank you.. so basically i would create the text etc in source sheet then in the main sheet i would type the formal?
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:20
Yes, that is correct. :)
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:21
If you can share the file you're working on, I can directly input the formula and reference as necessary so that you'd just be adding in codes and descriptions in another sheet.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:22
If you can't share, you can always download the document preview for your reference.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:22
You can download a copy of the document preview by going to File > Download as > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx). The formulas will be downloaded as well. :)
User 16/08/2018 - 11:23
oh wow!! that would be great... but i am at home and do not have my files at home.. i have just started a new job, and i need to update some work books and need to know more!..
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:24
Okay, noted on that. You can just download the file then for your reference. Do you have any more clarifications with the provided solution? :)
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:25
If you don't have any more clarifications at this point, you may end the session by clicking the END SESSION on the upper right of your screen.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:25
Also, I'd appreciate if you could drop a few lines for your great feedback on a survey after this session. Many thanks and have a great day!
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:27

Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:56
Sure thing, please do.
User 16/08/2018 - 11:56
so if i now type 1 in column b ie row 12... how will that text be there?
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:57
You can copy the formula in cell C7 and paste it in cell C8,.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:57
Just copy the cell down.,
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:58
You don't need to copy column DE.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:58
D.
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:58
Just column C>
Excelchat Expert 16/08/2018 - 11:58
Copy down column C, not D.
