Excel - Help on VLOOKUP Problem - Expert Solution

Question description:
This user has given permission to use the problem statement for this blog.

I have two lists. One is a list of part numbers. The other is a list of long text descriptions. I can use VLOOKUP with "*"&cell address"*" to find the first match. But how can I find the second and third matches? I have tried using INDEX and SHORT but the wild cards no longer find the match like they do in VLOOKUP. Can you help?

Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 06:50

User 19/06/2018 - 06:54
I normally can find text like that.
User 19/06/2018 - 06:54
I can't find the second incident of it.
User 19/06/2018 - 06:55
Do you see my problem?
User 19/06/2018 - 06:59
I am looking for a formula to put in D2 and E2 that will give me that result.
User 19/06/2018 - 07:01
I can use the wildcards with INDEX/MATCH but not with SHORT/INDEX which can find the next match.
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:02
Let me have a look at it and revert shortly
User 19/06/2018 - 07:02
Thanks.
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:07
Wait a minute, in what order do you want the numbers to output, because i don't see the relationship between 12 and part 234 brake
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:07
It seems as if its a matter of transposing the numbers
User 19/06/2018 - 07:08
In reality the vendor part number and the stuff in B is our internal mumbers at different plants. I need to find them all.
User 19/06/2018 - 07:09
A has the vendor part number in the long text. We have these parts in different plants with our own numbers but we have duplicates. I need to find the dupicates. But the vendor number is buried inside the long text.
User 19/06/2018 - 07:11
If I had known that we could share a sheet like this I would have prepared a better example ahead of time.
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:11
Check on the spreadsheet please
User 19/06/2018 - 07:12
Where? What cell?
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:13
What you try generating the numbers inside the texts?
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:15
Hello
User 19/06/2018 - 07:16
My example is really bad. I think I need to make a better sheet and get in touch iwth you again. I'm sorry I wasn't better prepared to talk wth you. I appreciate your trying to help.
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:18
Create a clearer example so that we can just tackle it with more clarity. I will take the query once you come back. Is that in order?
User 19/06/2018 - 07:18
Sounds good. It won't be today. Day is almost over. Is that okay?
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:20
No pressure. But when you come just repeat the same instructions so that i can know your issue and pick it up. To end the session you need to click on the orange button above the sheet
User 19/06/2018 - 07:20
Will do. Thanks again. :)
Excelchat Expert 19/06/2018 - 07:20
