This user has given permission to use the problem statement for this
blog.
i want to use an if formula to add two cells together and if when they are added the total is zero, i want the cell to change colour.

yes i want conditional formatting but with two cells being added together to give the value of zero which will change the colour of the cell

No a problem. The conditional formatting will work the same. Here is how to do it.

Let's assume we want to add A1 and B1 in C1. Then the formula is =A1+B1 right?

Okay, now we will select cell C1, then click on conditional formatting.
