Excel - How to Use Conditional Formatting With IF Statement - Expert Solution

Question description:
This user has given permission to use the problem statement for this blog.

I'm working on an Excel spreadsheet with 7 columns. If there is a DATE in column 5, I'm wanting the whole line formatted with strikethrough. How do I do this under conditional formatting? Or, is there another way?

Hello, I understand that you want to conditionally format cells when column 5 has a date, right?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:42
yes
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:43
Are you able to upload your file so I can analyze it better and offer the most accurate solution?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:43
yes...where do I find the upload "button"?
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:44
It's the clip icon next to this chat.
User 16/04/2018 - 03:44
when I push that nothing happens
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:45
Hmm, that's odd. Do you see the document preview to the right?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:45
yes I do
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:45
Can you try replicating your data in there? It doesn't have to be all of it, just a few sample lines.
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:46
Are you able to?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:47
I got lost LOL...I'm back...one moment and I'll copy and paste the info
User 16/04/2018 - 03:48
here it is
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:48
So date completed?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:48
Yes
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:48
And it starts in row 4?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:48
yes
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:49
Will there be any other values in the date column aside from dates?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:49
No
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:49
I mean, we can simplify the rule by checking if the date completed is NOT BLANK then we strikethrough.
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:49
So we don't have to check if it is a date.
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:50
Do you think that'll work?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:50
I agree but I couldn't get strikethrough to be on whole line
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:50
Oh so you already have a working conditional formatting?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:50
yes
User 16/04/2018 - 03:51
colors added for A, B, or C
User 16/04/2018 - 03:51
in column 1
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:51
Can you define what you meant by whole line?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:52
whole row
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:52
I'm asking because strikethrough can only be applied to cells with actual text on it.
User 16/04/2018 - 03:52
oh ok...
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:52
Meaning, if Action Taken is blank then we won't be able to make it show a strikethrough.
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:53
Only the actual cells with content and only the text themselves.
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:53
Do you want to proceed with that?
User 16/04/2018 - 03:53
I want to strikethough the rows where there is a date in column F
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:53
Okay, I think it would be better to show you what we can do.
Excelchat Expert 16/04/2018 - 03:53
