Question description:
This user has given permission to use the problem statement for this blog.

Excel tries to send an email to the person who created the workbook any time I edit a certain column in the workbook and I can't get it to stop-he no longer works for the company and doesn't need to know I'm updating the book.

Hello, I understand that your Excel file sends an email whenever you update it, right?
User 10/04/2018 - 04:09
It tries to, yes
User 10/04/2018 - 04:09
I can cancel the email but it's obnoxious
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:09
Okay, normally this can be achieved via VBA/Macro so what we can do is simply to disable the Macro in the workbook.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:09

User 10/04/2018 - 04:10
That is perfect, thank you
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:10
Do you use VBA/Macro in this file?
User 10/04/2018 - 04:10
I don't know. I don't know how that works (or what it is) but I was not the originator
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:11
I see. I had to ask because the easiest way to remove a macro in a file is to simply save the file as .xlsx file.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:11
That strips off the file with any VBA/Macro code so it can't send an email anymore.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:11
Can you try to save it AS .xlsx. Make sure you SAVE AS so you could keep the original copy.
User 10/04/2018 - 04:12
ok!
User 10/04/2018 - 04:12
done
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:12
After saving as .xlsx you can try updating the workbook and it should not be able to attempt to send an email anymore since all macros in this workbook will be removed.
User 10/04/2018 - 04:12
let me check to see if it fixed it
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:14
Any luck?
User 10/04/2018 - 04:14
Yes! I had to close and reopen it but it stops sending the email now
User 10/04/2018 - 04:15
thank you so much for your help!
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:15
That's great!
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:15
I'm glad to have helped!
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:15
Would there be anything else that I can help you with regards to the original question?
User 10/04/2018 - 04:15
It should just affect the email, correct?
User 10/04/2018 - 04:16
All the normal excel functions like list sorting should still be there?
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:16
That's the reason why I had to ask if you use any other VBA/Macro in your file because this will strip off all VBA/Macros in the file.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:16
All the basic functionalities of the file will still be there though.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:16
If you want, you can send me the file and I'll analyze it for you.
User 10/04/2018 - 04:16
Nope, I think it's all good!
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:16
That way, we can be sure that we are not removing anything else.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:17
Okay, here's what I'd suggest.
User 10/04/2018 - 04:17
there shouldn't be anything else in there
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:17
Keep a copy of the original file.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:17
If you notice any functionalities missing then you can simply revert back to the original file.
User 10/04/2018 - 04:17
I'll do that and if anything weird shows up I'll be back.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:17
Then you can contact us again so we can removed the email functionality directly instead of everything.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:18
But I doubt there's anything else that will get affected especially if you aren't even aware that there is a Macro in the file.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:18
So it should be fine saving the file as .xlsx.
Excelchat Expert 10/04/2018 - 04:18
