The problem is that the find and replace function is replacing the entire cell contents, not the string of text specified in find and replace.

Hi, I have a list of categorical data consisting of strings constantly being uploaded from a survey. I want to find a specific portion of the string and replace the entire cell content with a numerical value. For example: Student A Yes, I use an iphone Student B Samsung Student C I use a google pixel I want to replace all contents of a cell that has a string containing "iphone" with the number 1, "samsung" with the number 2, and "google" with number 3. So that I would end up having Student A 1 Student B 2 Student C 3
