countif formula for cells A1,A2 and A4 if greater then 0

I need a variable cell reference. I am using the countif function and I need the starting and ending arguments to vary. For example: =countif(x1y1:x2y2, "str")

having issues with countif forumla looking up values in a text string seperated by commas, whereby values can be similiar i.e S1 and 1, countif brings in values for both when not desired.
